Toxicology is a branch of science that studies the negative consequences of chemicals, substances, and conditions on humans, animals, and the environment. Toxicology is sometimes referred to as the "Science of Safety" because it has evolved from a science devoted to investigating poisons and the harmful consequences of chemical exposures to one committed to examining safety. Toxicology harnesses the power of research to forecast which substances will cause harm and how they will do so, and then disseminates that information to protect public health. Toxicology became known simply as the ‘science of poisons,’ a poison being any substance that, at a given amount, is capable of inflicting harm when delivered to a living being, either by accident or on purpose. Toxicology is now defined as “the study of all the negative consequences of chemicals or physical agents interacting with living organisms.” Toxicology is an interdisciplinary science that has grown and progressed by combining information from several fields. It incorporates knowledge and methodologies from a variety of basic sciences, including medicine, epidemiology, pharmacology, and even some engineering disciplines.
