Title : Risk assessment of plastic additive (DEHP) on pearl spot (Etroplus suratensis)

Abstract:

Di-(2-ethyhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is an emerging environmental pollutant especially in aquatic systems, due to its widespread production and use as additive in plastic industries. Although it is a known compound posing environmental risk, information on ecotoxicological effects of DEHP on estuarine fish (E. suratensis) gill and muscle is scarce and poorly understood. Herein, we investigated sub chronic toxicity and oxidative damage by DEHP on E. suratensis by targeting two different tissues i.e. gill and muscle. In response to DEHP exposure, significantly elevated antioxidant activity of SOD, CAT and LPO was observed in both gill and muscle tissue. Indicating enhanced production of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation causing cytotoxicity in fish. In comparison with muscle, gill depicted increasing effect of DEHP with time. Risk assessment results of integrated biomarker response corroborated with biochemical response, suggesting low DEHP concentration may pose detrimental effects to estuarine fish. Predominantly present study exploits the effect of DEHP on E. suratensis and helps in decoding it as detrimental effect to aquatic organisms.

Biography:

Aniket Desai studied Environmental science at the Doon University, Dehradun, India and graduated as MS in 2016. he then joined the research group of Dr. Mandar Nanajkar at the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Goa. He is pursuing his PhD degree in science (Marine Toxicology) at the same institution.
