Public health is defined as "the science and art of preventing diseases, extending life, and increasing quality of life via concerted efforts and informed decisions made by society, organizations (public and private), communities, and individuals." The foundation of public health is the analysis of a population's determinants of health and the challenges it faces. The public can be as small as a few individuals or as vast as a village or a metropolis; in the case of a pandemic, it could span multiple continents. Physical, psychological, and social well-being are all considered in the idea of health. Toxicology is the study of the harmful consequences of chemical, physical, or biological substances on living beings and the environment, as well as their prevention and mitigation. Toxicology harnesses the power of research to forecast which compounds will cause harm and how they will do so, and then disseminates that information to protect public health.
Regulatory toxicology is a branch of toxicology (the study of hazardous effects of chemicals) that applies scientific knowledge to the development of laws and other measures for decreasing and managing exposure to toxic chemicals. Regulatory toxicology is the study of the collecting, processing, and assessment of epidemiological and experimental toxicology data in order to make toxicologically informed choices that safeguard people from the adverse effects of chemicals. Regulatory Toxicology also encourages the development of standard protocols and novel testing methodologies in order to strengthen the scientific foundation for decision-making.
